TNO and Their Role

Collaborating with partners to drive the development of quantum technologies.
TNO is at the forefront of quantum technology, driving innovation across five focus areas: Quantum
Devices & Materials, Quantum Computing, Quantum Sensing, Quantum Communication Systems, and Quantum-Safe Technology.
Our five focus areas:
Quantum Devices and Materials: TNO excels in the design and fabrication of high-performing quantum devices. This includes chip design, high-quality materials, and state-of-the-art nanofabrication to protect fragile quantum states. The Quantum Information Technology Test (QITT) facility offers unmatched expertise in screening, characterization, and metrology of quantum devices.
Quantum Computing: TNO is advancing fault-tolerant quantum computation through error correction, scalability, hardware development, and control electronics. TNO contributed to the development of Quantum Inspire, Europe’s first public quantum computing platform, and continues to work with partners to develop advanced quantum computing systems.
Quantum Sensing: TNO leverages quantum properties to enhance sensor precision and sensitivity. At our Quantum Sensing Testbed, TNO develops and tailors quantum sensors for specific applications, using technologies like Scanning NV magnetometers and PICs-integrated magnetometers.
Quantum Communication Systems: TNO is pioneering secure communication methods using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and quantum internet technologies. TNO supports the development of land- and space-based quantum communications, network integration, and security services, including system and component benchmarking in our QKD test and evaluation lab.
Quantum-Safe Technology: TNO is preparing for a future where quantum computers could break current cryptographic systems by developing post-quantum cryptography methods. TNO raises awareness of the urgency to migrate to quantum-safe cryptography and offers practical migration advice through their PQC Migration Handbook.
Quantum ecosystem
TNO’s efforts are deeply integrated into the broader quantum ecosystem. As a co-founder of QuTech, alongside Delft University of Technology, TNO collaborates with international partners to drive the development of quantum technologies. TNO is also a key player in national and international consortia, contributing to initiatives like the National Agenda Quantum Technology and the European Commission’s Quantum Flagship. Through these collaborations, TNO ensures its quantum innovations are cutting-edge and aligned with global standards,
Delft’s quantum ecosystem thrives on partnerships, and TNO stands as a cornerstone, turning quantum potential into tangible progress.
