Delft & Leiden: A Quantum Region in Focus

Two Quantum hubs in focus
Quantum Delft and Quantum Leiden are two key hubs within the Dutch Quantum ecosystem, forming the core of the quantum landscape in South Holland. The strong connection between these hubs is largely driven by the Regional program, which has successfully strengthened ties between the two and linked the province to local, regional and national quantum initiatives. The hubs collaborate closely with the same provincial council and municipalities, including Rotterdam, The Hague, Delft and Leiden.
The Delft hub is a leader in advancing quantum technology through strong collaboration between academia, industry and research institutions. With a primary focus on hardware, it adopts a full-stack approach to developing both quantum computers and quantum internet infrastructure. This holistic approach aims to create fully operational quantum systems, paving the way for practical quantum computing and communication technologies.
The Leiden hub excels in quantum algorithms, quantum sensing technologies and innovative strategies to engage broader audiences with these complex topics. It offers a broad range of expertise in the quantum domain, including training the next generation of quantum experts through educational programs for all ages and levels.
Their proximity allows for easy travel between the hubs, making it convenient to attend networking events, lectures and other activities. Rather than competing, the two hubs complement each other with their distinct expertise and research focuses, creating a strong synergy.
Soon both hubs will have their own House of Quantum facilities. The BioPartner 4 building in Leiden, currently under renovation, will provide office and lab space for quantum startups. In Delft, startups can already find space in two House of Quantum buildings. These facilities include communal areas designed for hosting visitors and offering flexible labs and workspaces.
The two hubs come together in the QDNL Talent & Learning Centre, led by the Haagse Hogeschool. Together they connect students from vocational schools, applied universities and universities to quantum companies in our ecosystem. Delft and Leiden universities jointly offer the master’s program in Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST). Launched in 2023, this program has been a tremendous success, with even higher enrollment expected for 2024.
